Weight-loss diets may reverse atherosclerosis in obese, overweight people

A low-carbohydrate diet, a low-fat diet and the Mediterranean diet were equally effective in helping obese people to reverse carotid atherosclerosis after losing moderate amounts of weight and improving their blood pressure, in a study reported in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, the Nuclear Research Center and Soroka Hospital in Israel investigated whether diet could reverse atherosclerosis, a slow, progressive condition in which the arteries thicken with plaque buildup, increasing risk of heart attacks and strokes. The research team compared the three diets among overweight participants, mostly men, who were at high risk for atherosclerosis.

The researchers said, beyond drug treatment, the data is some of the earliest showing the potential of diet as a lifestyle modification strategy to prevent atherosclerosis. The findings indicate that sustained, moderate weight loss — not the macronutrient content of the different diets — leads to improved cardiovascular health.

Weight-loss diets may reverse atherosclerosis in obese, overweight people

“The reduced caloric intake is probably the major determinant of weight loss, but the macronutrient content determines patients’ satisfaction with the diet and the metabolic changes associated with the weight loss,” said Yaakov Henkin, M.D., study co-author and a cardiologist at Soroka University Medical Center, Israel. “The importance of these results is in the understanding that over two years, changes in carotid atherosclerosis are more strongly predicted by diet-induced changes in blood pressure.”

The study’s findings are promising and could be applicable to other populations. But since few women were in the study, gender-specific effects remain unknown, researchers said.

American Heart Association diet and lifestyle recommendations underscore the importance of balancing calories with physical activity to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight and acknowledge that macro nutrient content of the diet has little effect on energy balance with the exception of influencing diet satisfaction.

Woman Stress Management

woman in stress

Women are higher stress than men, either through biological, psychological, and emotional. Cause women to have more external controls in him with more use of emotion rather than logic. Happiness women also tend to be determined by others, not by her, especially in relation pairs.

Women have more complex problem. For example, women have to adapt when faced with puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth. With a complex problem, women are more stressed because of his tendency to rely more female brains work emotion than logic.

Each individual's adult age, must meet the task of psychological self-development. If the task was not fulfilled, they will appear stressed because of pressure from within themselves and the environment.

The expert said explained that among other tasks related to the pair a more serious relationship, levels of marriage, courtship, building a young family, becoming young parents, parents to bear life, and pursue a career.

Not to mention the choice between continuing education by taking care of children and families.

Success in the age is growing as human beings with normal adults, with the accomplishment of all tasks. So fair if there are women who feel depressed when the time had not yet married as adults, for example. This feeling is normal, because it is the duty of developments that need to be met and can not be avoided.

The complex problem makes higher stress in women. Plus women tend to be positioned in a social (gender roles), more sub ordinal, so that women tend to be difficult to control himself and always relying on others.

Women tend to see themselves as if to say that I do not deserve to be happy. Women are more to see what other people happy.

It is important to understand for a woman, that he should have control over her life. Controlling everything that can be controlled, at least by saying that he is also entitled to be happy with his choices.

This awareness must be built, and if it is conscious should be able to get out of the situation.

How many women are aware of this but did not dare to leave because there is no longer afraid of going to love her. In the end, stay in unhealthy relationships, such as violence in the household or dating violence, later still, culminate in marriage

Five Easy Steps for Permanent Change

Changes in your life require new behaviors. New behaviors take time to become habits and habits are needed for permanent change. Here are five steps for helping you make new habits.

First you need to decide what you want specifically to happen. If you went to the airport and told them, “Give me a ticket,” what would the airline employee ask? “Where would you like to go?” If you told them, “Just give me a ticket to anywhere,” what would they do? They would probably have airport security take you away and have your mental stability evaluated. People say they want change but they just don’t know what the change will look like. So easy step one is “Visualize your Goal”.

Second you need to determine what you’ll get from making the change. Let’s say you’ve decided to become healthier and lose weight because your doctor told you that you were too heavy. Everything we do is for one of two reasons, either to avoid pain or increase pleasure. So you might ask yourself, “What will happen to my health if I change my health habits?” You might see yourself as slim and trim and more attractive to the opposite sex. That would be changing for a pleasurable reason or reward. A different question could be “What would happen if I don’t change? This might lead you to see yourself having a heart problem limiting what you can do in life. This would be changing to avoid pain. So you’ll change either to avoid pain or to receive a pleasurable reward. The second easy step is “Determine the Reward You’ll Get from Making the Change.”

The third easy step is you have to decide what is it you have to do to change. Let’s stick with the decision to become healthier and lose weight. What steps would be needed to reduce your weight and become healthier? The steps might be exercise more, reduce your intake of fatty foods, eat more fiber, and reduce your portion size. You also need to give yourself a start date to start. So the next easy step to make a change is to “List What You Need to Do and Give Yourself a Start Date.”

Your next easy step for change is to take action. You have decided to lose weight and become healthier. You have made exercise a key component of your plan. Now you need to start so you begin exercising on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays mornings at the gym. This easy step is simply to “Take Action”.

Your final easy step is to maintain what you have decided to do. You have decided to exercise every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6 Am. The first week everything goes well. The second week you start off good on Monday, Wednesday you drag yourself out of bed but by Friday you decide you need your sleep so you stay in bed. The next week you exercise on Monday but you sleep in the rest of the week. Of course this won’t work. You need to stick to your plan. So this easy step is “Stick to Your Plan.”

Now let’s review the steps:
1) Visualize Your Goal then ‘
2) Determine the Reward You’ll Get from Making the Change
3) List What You Need to Do and Give Yourself a Start Date
4) Take Action
5) Stick to Your Plan

That’s it, five easy steps that you can use for permanent change.

Maintain a constant schedule. Your body's clock works best when you go to bed and awaken at the same time every day.

Use sleep time cues. Soft music in the background, a cup of sleepytime tea, etc.will make your subconscious mind realize that it is getting to be time for sleep.

Limit fluids before bedtime. If you drink too much before bed you may find yourself awakening to use the facilities.

Some foods can help with sleep. Tryptophan in turkey, milk, and peanuts, can be converted into serotonin, which helps you sleep.

Forget your worries. Fear of what could happen is a stimulant that you don't need at bedtime. Work out your alternatives to cope with your fears and take action on them during the day.

Meditate before bed. Meditation or Hypnosis programs before bed will quiet the mind and make it easier to fall asleep.

Going back to sleep Tips

Guided Imagery. Pleasant and monotonous mental images will help you drift back off to sleep. Try watching the ocean waves going in and out on the shoreline in your mind; or picture birds sleeping, or watch the gentle breathing of you chest

If you just cant go back to sleep. Try to do something relaxing out of bed...Hatha Yoga exercises done slowly can help. A video of nature scenes can often work wonders. Just don't lie there worrying about not sleeping.

Leave the lights off or put them on very low. Intense light tells the mind that it is time to wake up and it will keep you awake for several hours.

Use something with soft mellow sounds or music. Loud rapid tempo sounds and music stimulate the mind. Instead play music or sounds that are slower and with less volume
