Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, the Nuclear Research Center and Soroka Hospital in Israel investigated whether diet could reverse atherosclerosis, a slow, progressive condition in which the arteries thicken with plaque buildup, increasing risk of heart attacks and strokes. The research team compared the three diets among overweight participants, mostly men, who were at high risk for atherosclerosis.

The researchers said, beyond drug treatment, the data is some of the earliest showing the potential of diet as a lifestyle modification strategy to prevent atherosclerosis. The findings indicate that sustained, moderate weight loss — not the macronutrient content of the different diets — leads to improved cardiovascular health.

“The reduced caloric intake is probably the major determinant of weight loss, but the macronutrient content determines patients’ satisfaction with the diet and the metabolic changes associated with the weight loss,” said Yaakov Henkin, M.D., study co-author and a cardiologist at Soroka University Medical Center, Israel. “The importance of these results is in the understanding that over two years, changes in carotid atherosclerosis are more strongly predicted by diet-induced changes in blood pressure.”

Gastrointestinal absorption of oral insulin is hampered by factors such as enzymatic degradation and lack of permeation through epithelial cells, say the researchers.

They tested the value of combining human insulin with the novel drug-carrier molecule monosodium N-(4-chlorosalicyloyl)-4-aminobutyrate (4-CNAB) to facilitate gastrointestinal absorption in a single-center, open-label randomized study.

The proof-of-concept research included 10 men who had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes for over a year who were not treated with insulin therapy.

Participants underwent an overnight fast before receiving two capsules that each contained 150 U of oral insulin plus 200 mg 4-CNAB, or a subcutaneous injection for 15 U of regular human insulin on two separate occasions separated by up to 20 days.

Maximum plasma insulin concentration was significantly greater with oral administration than subcutaneous injection, at a mean of 93 versus 33 µU/ml. Oral insulin also had a faster onset of action, with a corresponding area under the curve for glucose infusion rates in the first hour of 173 versus 27 mg/kg.

Mean insulin concentration and glucose infusion rate returned to baseline within 3 hours of oral insulin administration. A mean of just 7%was absorbed in the 2 hours following oral insulin administration.

Reporting in the journal Diabetes Care, the team suggests: “The fast pharmacokinetic and metabolic time-profiles of [oral insulin] observed in this study may be advantageous in patients with Type 2 diabetes by restoring normal first phase insulin secretion and potentially leading to an improvement in glycemic control.”

Assessing the age and fasting blood glucose (FBG) of cardiac patients can help to reduce the need for oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) to detect undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes, researchers suggest.

Guidelines recommend screening all patients with cardiovascular disease with an OGTT, but prior research suggests this may only occur in half of all patients, say the German investigators.

“The main handicap why an OGTT is not performed in daily routine might be its intensiveness in time, personnel and costs,” they suggest in the International Journal of Cardiology.

In a search for clinical markers that could be used to identify high-risk patients who would benefit most from OGTT screening, they studied the predictive value of easily available clinical markers for undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes.

OGTTs were performed in all 1215 patients without known Type 2 diabetes who presented at a heart center with known or suspected coronary artery disease for elective coronary angiography from January to October 2007.

Results showed that 31.4% of the patients had normal glucose tolerance, 50.7% had impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance, and 17.9% were newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Therefore, 998 OGTTs did not result in the new diagnosis of undiagnosed diabetes, the team calculates.

FBG of at least 90 mg/dl and age of at least 55 years predicted undiagnosed diabetes. At these cut-off points, Type 2 diabetes could be diagnosed with a sensitivity of 81.1%, a specificity of 63.4%, and a positive predictive value of 32.5%.

“Thus, the number of subjects needed to be screened could be reduced from 1215 to 541, and costs and other resources of more than 55% of OGTTs be saved,” report Mark Lankisch (University of Witten, Dortmund) and colleagues.

They conclude: “The implementation of simple and rapid available measures as FBG and age is a helpful tool to reduce the number of OGTTs needed for the detection of so far undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes mellitis so that national and international guidelines can be followed more easily and unknown Type 2 diabetes mellitis can be detected more effectively.”

When I was in elementary school, I used hate my teachers, my friends, my brothers who called me Itik. They said, was the proper term for me, because I was talkative, noisy builders in class and always the culprit. kwek..kwek..kwek..

I hate called as Itik, I am even angry and cry when my friends called me with this title. But when I was more in angry and I cry they more incentive to make fun of me. Finally, I had to be silent and resigned.

In my mind, that duck is something bad, ugly, not good and stupid. When my teachers and my friends call me like that, I felt like I was stupid, ugly and overall is not sexy.

The Bali Hindu religion, the foundation of the ordered Balinese society, pervades every aspect of life. Bali Hinduism, which has root in Indian Hinduism and in Buddhism, adopted the animistic traditions of the indigenes, who inhibited the island around the first millennium BC. This influence strengthened the belief that the gods and goddesses are present in all things. Every element of nature, therefore, possesses its own power, which reflects the power of the gods. A rock, tree, dagger, or woven cloth is a potential home for spirits whose energy can be directed for good or evil. Consequently, offerings to low spirit, which are left on the ground, are usually scavenged by chickens or dogs. The larger offerings to high spirits are taken back to the family home after residing for a while at the temple, and the edible parts are then consumed by family members.

Balinese temples, embellished with a decorative display of stones carvings, consist of breezy, open air courtyards, surrounded by a wall and entered through a large split gate. Once inside the entrance is a free standing wall (aling-aling). Beyond the wall is a large, open area with many small shrines of various sizes, each dedicated to a different god or goddess. At temple festivals, the normally somber shrines are highly decorated, and worshippers come to pray and dedicate their offerings, then retire to talk with friends. A festival is a highly social occasion, culminating in a live performance of mask dance or puppets presented for all to enjoy-local villagers and guests as well as the spirits of visiting deities and ancestors, and even an occasional tourists.

The dance and masks dramas that are performed at the temples as part of the odalan are considered important offerings to the god and goddess. The deities would be hesitant to attend any birthday celebration where there is no entertainment. The fact is that quality time is a function of quantity. Quality moments are those little moments that are precious, unexpected, and important. They arise during the process of spending a large quantity of uninterrupted time with another person. You can’t dictate these moments in advance and you can’t decide to have quality time. You don’t go to it. It comes to you.

There are many ways to get the greatest amount of quality and happiness from your relationships with the members of your family. Perhaps the most important is to spend uninterrupted time with your spouse on a daily basis. You should set aside time together each night to talk after your children have gone to bed. But, it is equally important for you and your spouse to take some time every morning to communicate and interact as well.

Studies have shown that one of the most important things a man can do in a marriage is to help out with the various household and family responsibilities. Help prepare the meals, or take over the responsibility of cleaning up afterward. Help to get the children ready for school or for their activities, and take them there personally so that you can have one-on-one time with them.

Just because your spouse might have a frown on his or her face, don’t automatically assume something is wrong. He or she might just be thinking or contemplating about something. And if you keep pushing to find out what is wrong, you will often cause unnecessary stress and a problem.

If you see your spouse’s arms crossed and his or her lips curled downward don’t automatically assume they’re angry. Instead of automatically assuming your spouse is angry or upset about something and then asking what he or she is angry about. Imagine how you feel when you have your arms crossed and you lips curled down. Are you upset, angry, or just lost in thought? Think about how you would feel before you start making any assumptions.

When we first met our spouse, we loved him or her, even with all their bad habits. We overlooked the fact that he or she was sloppy or always late, and we focused on the things we loved about him or her. But now, five, ten, or twenty years later, we do the opposite. All we can see is the mess, or that our spouse is always late, or whatever the problem is. We forget, or more often take for granted all the things we loved about that person. This focus on the negative begins a vicious cycle in which we see only the negative, and then feel that’s all there is to that person, and then the relationship begins to spiral downward.

When this happens, take the time to sit quietly by yourself and remember what things were like when you first met you spouse. Remember all the things you loved. Remember the things you did together that were really fun. Ask yourself, how long has it been since you told your spouse what you appreciate about him or her. Then, after dinner and the kids have gone to bed, unplug the telephone, go to a nice relaxing place in the house, and tell your spouse what is on your list. Tell him or her some of the things you’ve been taking for granted, some of the things you’ve been overlooking in the relationship.

If you do this, and remember all the things you really love and appreciate about your spouse, and then take some time to talk to him or her about them, the results will be wonderful.

One of the keys to a happy relationship is to never make assumptions based on what you think a person’s body language is saying. Remove the mind reading and guesswork out of your communication. Don’t be a mind reader. Instead, be a curious observer.

Your children have a tremendous need to communicate with you. In fact, research has shown that the one factor that is more important than any other in the development of children is the amount of one-on-one time that parents spend with their children. When parents don’t spend a lot of time with their children individually, they send a message to their children that they are not very valuable or important. This causes children to experience feelings of inferiority, low self-esteem, and a negative self-image. And this will often lead to poor grades and behavioral problems.

When parents take the time to sit down with their children and ask questions and listen to what is going on in their minds, the children will feel a deep sense of value and importance. The children will have more self-confidence, happiness, and be better able to develop good relationships with others.

We have to remember that we are all value creators in everything we do. If you own a business, you have to create value for you employees or they will not continue to work for you. You have to continually create value for your customers or they won’t continue to do business with you. The same is true in your relationships, whether it is your spouse or a close personal friend. You have to constantly create value for the other person and satisfy their needs or they won’t stay in the relationship.
You don’t have to be superman or superwoman to properly balance the demands of your work and the needs of your family. You must, however, be more thoughtful, and be a better planner, use your time more effectively, and continually think of ways to enhance the quality of your life in both areas. If you set this as a goal and resolve to work toward it every day, you will gradually become far more efficient, effective, and a far happier person. A splash of cool water. One of my favorites is to gently splash myself with cool water before bed. The coolness tends to slow down the body's metabolism and make you more restful.

Maintain a constant schedule. Your body's clock works best when you go to bed and awaken at the same time every day.

Use sleep time cues. Soft music in the background, a cup of sleepytime tea, etc.will make your subconscious mind realize that it is getting to be time for sleep.

Don’t eat greasy foods before bed. Heavy oils can cause heartburn and make your sleep shallow and unrestful.

Limit fluids before bedtime. If you drink too much before bed you may find yourself awakening to use the facilities.

Some foods can help with sleep. Tryptophan in turkey, milk, and peanuts, can be converted into serotonin, which helps you sleep.

Forget your worries. Fear of what could happen is a stimulant that you don't need at bedtime. Work out your alternatives to cope with your fears and take action on them during the day.

Meditate before bed. Meditation or Hypnosis programs before bed will quiet the mind and make it easier to fall asleep.

First of all, we have been programmed by society to believe in and trust our minds over our hearts, so we may not even try to follow the intelligence of the heart. In my experience this is a grave mistake. Our mind can only respond after the fact based on memory, while our heart – our intuitive knowing – is always in the now responding appropriately to what is actually going on.

Even if we believe in the value of trusting the intuitive knowingness that flows from the heart, we can not always tell the difference between intuition and emotional reaction. They often can start out feeling the same.

Hearty Banana Muffins

Ingredients
* 2 1/2 cups crushed* Kashi Heart to Heart cereal
* 1 1/4 cups unbleached white flour
* 1/2 cup evaporated cane juice crystals or raw sugar
* 1 tablespoon baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1 cup mashed bananas (about 3 medium bananas)
* 1/2 cup nonfat milk or plain soymilk
* 2 egg whites
* 1/3 cup expeller pressed canola oil
* 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly oil muffin tins.
2. Combine first five ingredients in large mixing bowl.
3. In separate mixing bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients.
4. Add liquid mixture to dry mixture and stir until just combined.
5. Spoon batter evenly into prepared muffin tins.
6. For garnish, place three hearts from cereal on top of each muffin.
7. Bake until toothpick inserted in centers of muffins comes out clean, or about 20 minutes. Let cool and serve warm or at room temperature.

A perfumes scent will greatly differ within its surroundings. Your impression of a scent sprayed in a large heavily scented department store can be different than sprayed in your own home. Differences in temperature and humidity can also play a huge part in the smell of the perfume. However the main differences in the olfactory effect of a perfume is the compounds it contains, which will evaporate at relatively different speeds, this will affect all brands of perfume.

The way a perfume is described by the perfumers is by its fragrance composition. Top note, heart note and base note. This explains the way a scent develops and will be completely different in every perfume.

If you are searching for that perfect perfume, don't overdo it by spraying many, many different perfumes all over you as you nose will go "blind" and you will not be able to tell if you like the fragrance or not.

You should only test about four or five different perfumes at any time; you should spray these on an unperfumed part of your body and as far apart from each other as possible. In addition, a perfume will smell different on the individuals skin, what smells good on one person could smell totally different on yourself, this should be taken into consideration before choosing the right perfume.

Perfume is meant for people to enjoy when they are in close quarters with you, not for the people across the other side of the room. Don't apply too much perfume at any one time as this may make your scent appear too strong and you may not achieve that ideal perfumed fragrance.

Eau de cologne - was the most general fragrance in use about 300 years ago but is very rarely made anymore. The modern day equivalent is eau fraiche and all the major perfume houses like Dior and Elizabeth Arden produce them and they act a little like a concentrated eau de toilette.

Imagine being able to sit back, relax and allow your mind to drift off into a dreamy trance of wonderful colours and images, soothing and calming thoughts swirling through your mind. You wake up feeling calm and refreshed only to find that you are down to a beautiful healthy and happy weight. Well I’m sorry, but that’s not quite the reality of the situation, despite what some might claim. However hypnosis can influence your subconscious mind and persuade it to make some permanent changes to your habits, which will have the knock on effect of permanent change to your weight.

When the average person thinks about hypnotherapy, they usually associate it with quitting smoking and weight loss. These seem to be the two main areas that people turn to hypnosis for. Hypnotherapy is also very useful for many other issues as well.

I will explain to you some of the tactics I, as a hypnotherapist, typically employ in order to help patients with their goals for losing weight. This will hopefully help and inspire you with your own weight loss goals.

The very first thing I establish with a patient is a clear and realistic goal as to how much weight they wish to lose. Most people find it useful to have a 6 month plan, as a year can be a daunting time frame. You can always start another plan after you have finished this one if you need to lose a lot of weight. A realistic amount of weight loss might be 24 pounds in a 6 month period, depending on their existing weight. It seems a lot less daunting when you think that this works out at 4 pounds of weight loss per month, around a pound per week.

I then discuss eating habits. Personally I feel it is prudent to focus more on eating habits than exercise, since reducing eating is by far the easiest way to lose weight. Our bodies are incredibly efficient, and can generate a lot of work for only a relatively small amount of calories burnt. Of course increasing exercise helps, but it can cause confusion between goals of losing weight, and increasing fitness, which are not the same thing. Most people know their bad habits when they are honest with themselves, and actually think about their eating habits in some detail. Think for a moment about some of your eating habits which would benefit from change.

One of the most common and destructive habits I regularly find is that people give themselves too large portions of food, and feel they have to finish everything on their plate. This causes them to over eat, and ignore their body telling them that they have eaten enough. This creates further problems as they are effectively training their brain to set its ‘satisfied’ threshold much higher than it should be, meaning they need to eat more in order to feel satisfied.

Whilst in a hypnotic trance, I talk to the patients’ subconscious mind, the part where all their habits and desires are formed. I persuade them to get into the habit of leaving some food on the plate at every meal, even if it is sometimes only a small amount. I then ask the subconscious mind to really listen to the body as to when it has eaten enough, and to eat a little slower in order to help this process. This helps the mind reset back to its default position of how much food it needs before feeling satisfied.

It is surprising how much difference this can make. By allowing the body to tell you how much to eat, instead of being dictated to by the amount of food on the plate, a persons’ weight can start to move down towards its natural level. The simple act of leaving something on your plate at every meal sends a powerful message to yourself that you are in control of how much you eat. Done for every meal, every day for 6 months will make a HUGE difference. It can sometimes be difficult to remember to do this, and to stay motivated, but hypnotherapy can greatly help with this.

Think about it, you don’t want a plate of food to dictate terms to you, do you?! If this sounds like you, make a stance and dictate to the plate of food how much of it you wish to eat. Feel the passion, feel the power - you own that plate of food, not the other way round! Make that stance now!

I may also persuade a patients’ subconscious mind to modify a few more habits, such as eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, and reducing eating high fat convenience meals, mayonnaises etc.

Hypnosis cannot take the weight off you, but it can help you to modify your behaviour, to make permanent changes in order to facilitate permanent weight loss. It cannot unfortunately offer you the miracle where you fall asleep and wake up the next day having lost 24 pounds without any effort or changes. You must make permanent changes to your lifestyle in order to make permanent changes to your weight. You must accept that you need to make changes in order to lose weight. Hypnosis can help you to make these changes and meet your weight loss goals, but it cannot do it for you, and it cannot do it over night!

You do not need to make drastic changes and live a Spartan existence in order to lose weight. In fact I would advise against this as you are likely to quit and revert back to your old eating habits. Simple and relatively painless permanent changes can yield great results over a period of time. It’s more about sustained effort if you want permanent results. Whenever you feel like reverting back to old habits, think about all the wonderful benefits that you will enjoy being a slimmer, more attractive, and healthier you. Think about them for a moment now. What are the benefits of being slimmer? How will your life be enhanced? Learn to love and respect yourself. Act now. You know you’re worth it!

Imagine how you would feel in 6 months time having lost weight. Imagine the satisfaction you will feel knowing that you have achieved this with good honest and sustained effort. Imagine how great you will look. You would probably feel on top of the world! Good luck!

To some people, the idea of having cosmetic surgery seems like a waste of time, money, and too risky to be worth it all. Perhaps those are the "beautiful people" who have no physical flaws and could make millions of dollars just standing in front of a camera posing as models. Most of us are in a different situation.

Perhaps you have lost a lot of unsightly pounds only to discover that you look older and more wrinkled that you did when you were heavier. Having a tummy tuck could make you happier with your new body.

One of the things that results when you lose weight is that gravity seems to take over. Whether your weight loss was from changing your eating habits or from having a baby, the results are the same. Even if you are young and have excellent elasticity, some excess skin needs to be dealt with.
